FORECASTING
A dizzying hybrid experience of reality and virtuality unfolds in front of our eyes. Moving alone on stage with a laptop, Barbara Matijević shapes her body as a seamless extension of the two-dimensional world of videos, made by anonymous users of YouTube. In Forecasting Giuseppe Chico & Barbara Matijević establish a space-time suspended between two parallel systems of perception: that of physical reality and that of the screen. An intriguing and humorous dialogue, challenging the way in which technology affects our senses, our relationship with objects, movement and our understanding of presence.
The work of Chico and Matijević explores what theatre and performance can mean in contemporary life that is being so profoundly transformed by the “new tools of the mind” such as the Internet. In Forecasting, they point to the ever-increasing influence of digital tools in the construction of the Self and the collective imaginary. The piece received the Special Jury Prize at the 56th MESS Theater International Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2016.

NEW TECHNOLOGY IS REWRITING BODIES AND NARRATION
Our work is based on the practice of network navigation. In this context, the attitude towards narration changes. The coexistence and the juxtaposition of different contents on a single web page is much more complex than the TV zapping – the multitude of simultaneous stories mutually influence each other’s perception and interpretation.
As every new technology changes the world a little, it also changes our bodies in it. One could say that the internet flow is now in our blood, and that one might just as well learn to live with it – test it, spill it, transfuse it, clean it.
After years of clicking on interfaces, objects in the world do not appear the same anymore. We believe that theatre has to take into consideration the ways in which technology affects our senses, our comprehension of narration, our relation to culture, and our understanding of presence.
The basic premise of a performance – « an actor in front of an audience » - is no longer the same since millions of people have been putting themselves en scène on You Tube videos.
In FORECASTING, You Tube videos become fantastical prolongations of performers’ bodies, the places of projection into the changes that the technological evolution can provoke in our thoughts, cognitive processes, mental and physical habits, as well as in the ways we apprehend our bodies.
