In an attempt to get hold of the inevitable passing of time, The Way You Sound Tonight aims to eternalize a moment. Evolving into a multi-layered universe, the audience experiences one of its continuous cycles, each lasting an hour.

Powered by the pulsating, growing rhythm of breath and heartbeat, the five performers keep going without any stop. Night and day emerge. Starting from a single movement, the performance becomes an intensely entrancing trip. The present, undeniable and amplified, flows right into the body.

Soaring to an endless end, and coming full circle, the one performer that gives a cycle a final touch, makes a comma, a start of what is next. The echo from the past develops into a new beginning. Fragile and elusive, it fuels the life that expands in between.

Arno Schuitemaker, while dealing with a personal loss, created The Way You Sound Tonight both as a realization and as a reminder that in memory things infinitely remain. The performance, created in collaboration with lighting designer Jean Kalman and composer Aart Strootman, premiered at the Holland Festival. It was “one of the highlights”, according to Cultuurpers.
